Christmas Greetings from the Aurora

As we now head, full swing, deep into the Christmas season, the Aurora Theatre would like to convey its most sincere wishes to the visitors of this website, recipients of its regular mailshots, and above all, its esteemed patrons.

It might be highly unconventional, and foreigners who are not so acquainted with the Maltese religio-cultural context many-a-time quiz why a theatre prides a larger-than-life statue of Our Lady in its entrance. But, knowing the roots and origins of our theatre, the link between the mother organization (The Leone Philharmonic Society), Gozo’s mother-church, and the traditional religious festivities in honour of Our Lady being Assumed into Heaven, leaves very little room for further explanation.

With this context clearly set, although not exclusive or restrictive to race or religion, the Aurora Opera House and the Leone Philharmonic Society join the Catholic Church in celebrating Christmas. Therefore, it is no surprise that during this time of the year, the theatre also displays it’s own life-size crib – the tableaux depicting the nativity scene.

Set in the rustic ambience of the theatre’s subterranean arched cellar, the display consists of the Holy Family and Bethlehem Grotto’s landlord, ably crafted by Gozitan artist Manwel Grech. The crib is exhibited all day long from 8am until 10pm, entrance to which is free of charge.

And so, as the Aurora façade illuminates a large share of lower Republic Street, the management invites all people of goodwill to visit our crib any of these days, or on Saturday December 28th, 2013, when we are putting up The Leone Grand Christmas Show. You may wish to get your tickets online from this very website. But in addition, we would like to inform you that we have announced Giuseppe Verdi’s Il Trovatore, on October 11th, 2014. Further details, including ticket prices, online purchasing facilities, and other information, will be disseminated soon.

In the meantime, the Aurora Opera House would like to wish a Holy Christmas Season to all those who find joy in the Holy Mystery of the Incarnation, and a peaceful and merry holiday season to all.
