The Opera Platform IconENGLISCH: Several events are taking place around the European continent to mark Europe Day on May 9th; a day, which in itself, intends to enhance the sense of belonging to the European continent and its dream, and convey the values that shape this union of countries. Events revolving around Europe Day vary in style and nature. Off the cuff, one may identify European Youth Week, earmarking youth participation in social activism. But, what is of more concern to us is the European Opera Week.

Thanks to the international organization << Opera Europa >>, that embraces 155 opera companies, there are two important international events taking place simultaneously this week.

Madrid: the European Opera Capital
Firstly, Opera Europa is holding the Madrid Spring Conference between 6th and 8th of May. Conference meetings are being held at the Teatro Real de Madrid, with side events being staged at the Teatro de la Zarzuela, Teatro Real and broadcast in the major plazas around the city. This year’s theme is << Opera Alive and Online >>, marking a global bid for opera companies to diversify and increase opera audiences worldwide. For this matter, Opera Europa, in collaboration with ARTE and the European Commission have launched << The Opera Platform >>, on which operas and concerts can be streamed free, live and on demand. www.theoperaplatform.eu.

The Aurora Theatre has its own representative among 325 other participants in Madrid. Furthermore, our theatre is already in regular contact with the ARTE Franco-German television network on another project. So far, the Aurora has been invited to observe and network through Opera Europa and its Madrid Conference. The backdated broadcast of the 2014 production of Il Trovatore on Malta’s national television station – TVM and TVM2, was a major breakthrough in this direction, thanks to the collaboration with the Maltese State broadcaster PBS Ltd. Hopefully, we can be valid contributors in the months and years to come in line with this new opera online platform as well.

Opera in Malta, particularly opera in Gozo, was, is and will remain a miracle. And for the Aurora, the next big thing to doing this miracle to levels of excellence, is to make it possible for other agents to do their own little miracle in the world of opera too.

European Opera Days

Secondly, opera companies and opera houses around Europe are currently holding events related to European Opera Days, between 8th and 10th May. This constitutes a robust outreach programme by the opera world to get to new audiences. Eventually, the digital platform is aimed to become part and parcel of this initiative. Only last year, more than 100 opera companies brought more than 230,000 people in theatres in events related to these European Opera Days.

Although the Aurora is, as yet, holding no specific Opera Days events of its own, it is reaching a very important objective of this initiative in a different, yet very concrete way, in collaborating with other agents and stakeholders for the promotion of opera. On the forefront of such initiatives is the collaboration with the Gaulitanus Choir, which is making a second opera per year possible in Gozo, at the Aurora.

The aim is that, in any way, opera is promoted, opera is increased and more members of the public are included in this artistic genre. Therefore, it is the Aurora’s great pleasure to make a second opera – actually, to make more operas – possible and available for the public in Malta and Gozo, be it local or foreign.

Opera in Malta, particularly opera in Gozo, was, is and will remain a miracle. And for the Aurora, the next big thing to doing this miracle to levels of excellence, is to make it possible for other agents to do their own little miracle in the world of opera too.
