Pasadena Profile

Jacob de Haan (b. 1959)

This composition by Dutch-born Jacob de Haan is named after the Californian city of Pasadena that almost borders on the Saint Gabriel Mountains near Los Angeles. Its first movement is rather expressive, bringing to mind the exquisite statue gardens and impressive villas, such as Huntington Art Gallery and Freyes Mansion. This is followed by a contrasting Latin-rock swinging second movement. This is based on the traditional New Year’s Day Rose Bowl. It ends with a more extrovert version of the first theme. De Haan is a professor of music at the State Music Academy in Leeuwarden, specializing in arrangements. He has been publishing music for around three decades.
