Aida is Aida.
It's the opera known by who doesn't know opera at all. But it's also the opera that has it all for whoever opera occupies the most tender share of his soul. It features a larger-than-life story in an exotic world. It asks for a chorus that can blow the roof out and the house down. Yet it is potentially one of the most intimate operas ever written. Set in Ancient Egypt, with the best elements for lavish costumes and sets, Aida runs on some of the greatest music ever written.

A New Aurora Opera House Production - 2020

One of the Aidas that resonated most when two horses took the stage with a world famous cast featuring Anna Valdetarra, Andrea Elena, Alessandra Canettieri and Luigi De Corato amongst other. Regia by Novella Tabili and musical direction by Colin Attard. (24 April 1999)

With love triangles, triumphal marches, choruses and horses, Aida rekindles memories and evokes the brazen spirit of what 'opera in Gozo' really means.

What's more?

This will not be 'just another' Aida. While we cannot reveal anything for the time being, word has it that Auguste Mariette notes have been spotted in Vivien Hewitt's travel bags as she has been reconfirmed by the Aurora to direct her third opera there. Strong and solid as ever, Colin Attard will be directing his second Verdi score this year, as this Aida in October follows Otello being produced by Gaulitana in April, yet again at the Aurora.

So whether your love for opera can never be overrated and you're in search for something you haven't yet seen, or whether you'd like to try the opera experience for the first time, let yourself go and secure your tickets now. You'd be surprised how many tickets have already gone at this time of the year!

Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901), composed Aida, in four acts, to celebrate the opening of the Khedivial Opera House. He was paid 150,000 francs. The actual premiere was delayed because of the Siege of Paris (1870–71), during the Franco-Prussian War. Aida eventually premiered in Cairo in late 1871. Contrary to popular belief, the opera was not written to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, for which Verdi had been invited to write an inaugural hymn, but had declined.

Antonio Ghislanzoni (1824-1893), an Italian journalist, poet, and novelist, wrote librettos for Verdi, among other composers, of which the best known is Aida. Set in the Old Kingdom of Egypt, Ghislanzoni's scheme follows a scenario widely attributed to the French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette, even if some argue it could be the work of Temistocle Solera.
