James Swearingen (b.1947)

Composed in 1986, Centuria is one out of more than 450 published works for band, by American born composer James Swearingen. It forms part of a very particular genre termed as ‘Concert Literature’ – a style of two to six-minute long pieces for bands. This five-and-a-half minute overture, in typical ternary (fast-slow-fast) structure, brings out the best of different sections of the band as contrasting rhythms and harmonies are blended to create a piece that is ideal for concert openings. As music education lies at the heart of Swearingen’s musical activity, Centuria is “dedicated to the C.L. Barnhouse Co. in honour of their 100 years of service to the music educators throughout the world”.
