With over 50 opera productions to her credit in Europe, Asia, Latin America and USA, her expertise extends to costume and light design.

Born in Ireland, she has lived and worked in Italy since she began her post degree research work with the Institute of Verdi Studies in Parma and the British School in Rome.

Her latest stagings include La Bohème for Sugi Opera in Seoul, two different productions of Madama Butterfly for the Puccini Festival and the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Il Barbiere di Siviglia for the Carlo Felice, Tosca at the 5000 seat Yonsei Arena in Seoul, The Fairy Queen in Florence with the Maggio Musicale Ensemble and Rigoletto at Seoul Arts Centre.

At the Puccini Festival’s 3.400 seat open-air theatre in Torre del Lago she has directed Madama Butterfly, Edgar, Tosca, Gianni Schicchi and Suor Angelica. Her Madama Butterfly, designed by famous Japanese sculptor Kan Yasuda and the Florentine fashion designer Regina Schrecker, is the most widely acclaimed and longest running production in the e 64 year history of the Festival. Due for revived this summer, it has been on the bill in Torre del Lago in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2010 and 2012 and 2016. It won the Fuji Prize for the best event in the Italy in Japan 2001 cultural year, has been performed in Tokyo, Nagasaki, Kobe (2001), the Wiesbaden Maifestspiel (2002), Baltimore Opera (2003), the Tokyo Bunka Kai Kan in 2005 for the World Expo in Japan and in Ferrara, Pisa (2012) and Seoul Arts Center, totaling over 120,000 spectators.

She has directed Turandot at Porto Alegre and Montevideo, Tosca in Seoul and Lima, Don Carlo and Lucia di Lammermoor for the Teatro Solis in Montevideo, Gianni Schicchi at the Damascus Opera and in many other theaters, Rigoletto in Seoul, La Traviata in Lima in Peru, Don Carlo, and Lucia di Lammeroor in Montevideo, Il Barbiere di Siviglia in Rome, Rieti and Arezzo, Cavalleria Rusticana at Bergen Royal Castle and at the Illica Festival and L’elisir d’amore at the Puccini Festival and in Florence.

In the early stages of her career she directed Don Giovanni for Maltafest and La Bohème and Pagliacci at the Manoel Theatre. She has enjoyed staging rare operas like Le Convenienze Teatrali by Donizetti, Bastian and Bastienne by Mozart, La Belle Hélène by Offenbach, L’Ormindo by Cavalli e La Serva e l’Usssero by Luigi Ricci.
She has also staged contemporary works like Snow White by Luigi Zaninelli at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and Pinocchio by Natalia Valli at the Festival Puccini.

She has directed star names like Andrea Bocelli, José Cura, Vincenzo La Scola, Salvatore Licitra, Stefano Secco, Aquiles Machado, Luis Lima, Juan Francisco Gattell, Daniela Dessì, Hui He, Amarilli Nizza, Cristina Gallardo Domas, Donata D’Annunzio Lombardi, Nino Machaidze, Ghena Dimitrova, Cecilia Gasdia, Luca Salsi, Alberto Gazale, Massimo Cavaletti, Juan Pons, Sherrill Milnes, Giorgio Zancanaro, Nicola Ghiuselev and Erwin Schrott.

Vivien Hewitt Biography 4Vivien enjoys working with young singers and has organized over 400 concerts, musical and theatrical events where she has sought out and featured budding stars like Massimo Cavaletti, Gabriele Viviani, Serena Farnocchia, Salvatore Licitra and Inva Mula. She teaches university courses in Musical Dramaturgy and Theatre Production at the Accademia Europea in Florence. She has taught acting and interpretation Masterclasses at the EOS Young Artists Ensemble of the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova, at Maggio Formazione - Opera Futura in Florence, for the Puccini Festival Young Artists Program, Illica Opera Stage in Castell’Arquato, Opera Network in Firenze and the Masterclasses of the National Tosti Institute of Ortona dedicated to Mozart and the Italian 18th Century.

Expert on how socio-economic factors have influenced opera production over the centuries, she is author of the books Theatres of Leghorn between the Enlightenment and the Risorgimento 1782-1848, Caruso, Puccini and the Hunchback match-seller and The Land of Puccini (1991, 2nd ed. 1996). She has many other published research articles to her credit.

Director and script writer of several documentaries, with frequent radio and tv appearances to her credit on BBC, Channel 5, Arté, RAI, France 5, RAI International and TV Catalunya, she has also collaborated on major exhibitions like Nessun Dorma at the National Opera in Beijing (2010) and Pearl Opera House in Guangxhou (2011), as well as on “Puccini in the Cinema” for the Puccini 150th Celebrations (2008).
