Tribute to the late tenor Paul Asciak
Rigoletto an opera in 3 acts composed by Giuseppe Verdi will be held as part of the 9th edition of Gaulitana: a festival of music, in tribute to the late renowned Maltese tenor Paul Asciak, this being the first operatic production in Malta after the demise of this important operatic personality. Asciak is remembered for his great contribution to the local musical scene, particularly due to his own important international career – which also included performances of Rigoletto, his involvement in musical administration, and especially as being the mentor behind tenor Joseph Calleja. Paul was also a supporter of Gaulitanus Choir, often honouring the choir with his presence at the choir’s events, the last being for last year's Tosca. Widow Bice Asciak will be a special guest of the night. Colin Attard leads the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and the Gaulitanus Choir. Set design and production are entrusted to Enrico Castiglione.

Rigoletto starts at 8pm. A pre-opera talk by Albert G Storace will be given at the Francesco Masini Hall at the Aurora Theatre, at 7pm. Therefore, gates open at 6.45pm. Remaining tickets are priced at €80, €70, €60, €45 and €30 (with an option of €20 rates for students in the lowest-priced area).

Post-performance dinner
Several hotels and catering establishments are known to provide late-night post-performance dinners. While these remain solely at the discretion of the respective establishments, the Aurora Theatre’s staff would be happy to recommend a few places for those interested in such service. Among these establishments, one may find Maldonado Restaurant (www.maldonado.com.mt / 99019270), which is a lovely renovated town house cellar, not more than 10 minutes walk from the theatre, offering exquisite Mediterranean cuisine. Of course, prior booking, at Maldonado and elsewhere, is always essential.
