INGLESE: Nationality, ethnicity, religion and race, even though they should not, tend to divide us. Music should remind us that, above all, we are part of one humanity. So it is despicable to see that violent assaults are targeted to houses and patrons of the arts. As a reminder of the one humanity we belong to, the Aurora Opera House (Gozo, Malta) sports the French colours, with sympathy, empathy and support. #ParisAttacks

Sympathy message shared on websites and social media and sent to the people of the French Republic through the French Embassy in Valletta.

At the Aurora, and on the social media, people have admired us; people have complemented us. People have looked up to us, as we lit our Aurora Opera House in what could possibly be the trendiest three colours of the time – the French Blue, White and Red.

Aurora sports le tricolore
Le tricolore has always stood for high and noble values. And they still do. But the question remains: why does the Aurora Theatre feel the need to wash its façade in these colours?

It’s not about being trendy or fashionable. It’s not a question of going with the flow. It’s not about media attention. It’s about a principle. We did not sport Kenyan colours when students were assaulted at the Garissa University, we did not even sport the same French colours when Charlie Hebdo was assaulted in Paris last January. Back then, it wasn’t a question that we did not care, or did not empathise. We did, like everybody else. We did care, as we still do care about each and every migrant tragedy, about Lebanon, about Syria, about any other devastation, even on home turf.

As humans, as a nation, as a theatre…

This time, however, the Aurora wants to show solidarity and stand up for one particular principle. While origin and religions gather us in groupings and, sadly enough, divide us in groups, music and the arts go precisely in the opposite direction. They should remind us that, above all, we are part of one human race. Thus, it is despicable to see that violent assaults are targeted to houses and patrons of the arts. In this regard, we cannot stand indifferent. As humans, we stand with all people of good will. As a nation, we stand with the French. As a theatre, we stand with the Bataclan and its patrons and again…
