The 7th edition of the Leone Goes Pop was officially launched to the members of the press, during a press conference, yesterday Friday 30th May 2014 at Ta’ Frenċ Restaurant.

During the launch, the Leone Philharmonic Society presented the main production details, the theme, participants and nature of the event. These details were disclosed by conductor Colin Attard, who built upon the rationale behind such an event, which was explained by Society President Dr Michael Caruana.

Both Dr Caruana and Mro Attard sat on the panel of the Press Conference. The Leone Philharmonic Society was further represented on the panel by Administrative Secretary Joseph Debrincat, and his son Joseph Debrincat (jr), who as Assistant Conductor will also conduct a musical number during the Leone Goes Pop.

The Press Conference panel also included Gozo Minister Anton Refalo, Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis and Victoria Mayor Samuel Azzopardi, as this event is being organized in collaboration with the Victoria Local Council who celebrates Victoria City Day just 3 days after this concert.

Amongst other addresses, Gozo Minister Refalo had words of praise for the Leone Band who took the innovative initiative 6 years ago to venture outside the customary comfort-zone of band-marches into modern and contemporary genres. This resulted in having this pop concert as a staple musical appointment in Gozitan early-summer. Furthermore, this event is enabling Gozitan talent to get an ever-growing audience as artistic levels continue to soar and audiences becoming ever more international.

The Ministers thanked the Leone Philharmonic Society for its efforts and pledged the government’s support – Ministerial and otherwise, including the support coming via the Local Council. Indeed, such collaborations with the local council was deemed as highly recommended.

During the press conference, it was announced that Colin Attard will direct the Leone Band in a 90-minute concert, hosted by the comic duo DANUSAN (Daniel and Sander). Local popular singers Chris Grech and Raquela, together with soprano Claire Caruana will accompany the Leone Band in some sung numbers, pretty evidently revolving round the theme of football, as the pop concert anticipates the World Cup finals by a handful of days.

The Leone Philharmonic Society would like to thank all those how have attended the Press Conference, the members of the press who have covered it and the management of Ta’ Frenċ Restaurant for hosting the Press Conference.
