ENGLISCH: Yes! It’s that time of the year again. It is that time of the year when in the (not-so-) cold months of the year, bands and responsible organisations would be preparing for what is know as the ‘summer festa season’.

Gozo (and Malta) goes through a very colourful summer, with one festa every weekend in a different village. A festa may best be summed up as a colourful spree of sacred liturgy, devotion, noisy revelry, decorative street furniture, and spectacular fireworks… and one or two reasons to down a few extra cold beers. The sacred liturgy in honour of the patron saint is always in the hands of the parish church administration. However, outside on the streets, the organisation generally revolves around a band.

The Leone Band is no less. Actually, it is the oldest in existence (since 1863), and as its turn comes to organise the national and traditional celebrations in honour of the Assumption of Our Lady into Heaven, leading up to the 15th of August, it also spends its own year preparing for such an annual event.

This Sunday, February 28th, in view of this feast, commonly and affectionately known as Santa Marija, the Leone Band is recording a set of 10 festive band marches. These are usually issued and sold as a set on CD. A good number of band aficionados and collectors make it a point to add every year’s collection to their own gallery of memorabilia. Hence, the recording of festive band marches is something that recalls quite a local interest.

The set of festive band marches will also be on sale from the opera house and online via email on teatruaurora@leone.org.mt

Conductor Colin Attard directs the 80-strong band. John Cauchi from PRO Studios (Sannat, Gozo) will master the recording session. This recording follows a course of band rehearsals that also took place in the theatre’s semi-basement floor that doubles as an entertainment club.

The recording session starts at 9.30am, and although it constitutes one major event in the musical and cultural calendar of the theatre, it is generally closed for the general public.
