The Bishop’s Conservatory Secondary School’s is back with great anticipation after an absence of 2 years. This year’s musical is about Christmas, which is meant to be a time of good cheer and celebration, but for many, it is stressful and painful.
The typical perception of Christmas is incredibly optimistic, and the first image is automatically a happy family gathered together to share a meal cooked to picture-postcard perfection… but, life and relationships are complex and messy, and it is difficult to guarantee the mainstream portrayal of this ‘perfect’ Christmas. It may be more difficult for children to process this reality, but it can be equally hard for adults and parents to experience the disappointment that such failed expectations may bring.
The title, “Ġieħ il-Milied”, is a pun on the Maltese word ‘ġieħ’, which may mean honour, and may mean ‘came about’. The production includes live music, song and dance featuring the whole student population of the Bishop’s Conservatory Secondary School, aged 11-15 years.
While the target audience is characteristically friends and relatives of the student population, the general public is this year being invited to attend. The performance, however is in Maltese.
This production seeks to undercover these realities and let the mystery of Christmas enlighten our lives.
BCSS takes pride in being a Catholic school, not only on paper but also in practice. BCSS advances the notion of Christianity from a religion to a way of life, both on a policy level but also on a personal level. A main pillar of Christianity is loving one another, regardless of background, ability, race, or religion, which is why inclusion is a priority for the school.
BCSS caters for girls between the ages of 11 and 16. Each Form consists of 3 mixed ability classes. The school strives to provide diverse skills to its students beyond the academic whilst promoting their self confidence and resilience. Theatre productions such as this, therefore, come to the fore as part of a holistic and comprehensive educational and formative strategy.
