TEATRU TAL-OPRA AURORA,
VICTORIA, GOZO, MALTA
The Leone Grand Christmas Variety in December is a staple event in the cultural calendar of the Teatru tal-Opra Aurora and its mother-organisation, the Leone Band. Here come a few shots of the special night on 23rd December 2022, as captured by Paul Scicluna.

The Leone Grand Christmas Variety at the Teatru tal-Opra Aurora was the main event in the Christmas-in-Gozo programme, run by the Directorate for Cultural Heritage within the Ministry for Gozo, on the Friday before Christmas, 23rd December.

Here come a few shots of the special night on 23rd December 2022, as captured by Paul Scicluna.

Hosted by Matthew Sultana, the concert featured prominently the Leone Band which served as the visual and artistic backdrop of the event. Live-artist Paul Stellini depicted the environs with the band on stage and the audience gracing the Emvin-Cremona signed, Aurora Opera House.

The Aurora’s own junior chorus gave a very animated rendition of Lionel Bart’s hit-track Consider Yourself from the musical Oliver, as they sang and danced in period costumes. Up next were the children from the Colibri Aerial Dance Academy.

As Paul Stellini painted on, the Leone Band played the soundtrack of the motion picture movie Polar Express while the teenage dancers from Colibri Aerial Dance Academy gave an impressive aerial acrobatic display.

The Aurora Youth Choir sang the backing vocals to the live recording of Angela Lansbury singing Tale as Old as Time from Beauty and the Beast, in a tribute to the legendary artist who passed away in 2022. A charity collection then took place as the European Parliament’s President, Roberta Metsola shared her pre-recorded message for the Generators of Hope campaign. The children sang the Prayer for Ukraine in Ukrainian and the audience amassed a striking €1360.00 collection as Noel Formosa explained how help reaches those in need.

Up next was a time for audience involvement and games as Mrs Bugeja and Mr Sciberras were chosen to build their tallest block tower on stage.

This time, the audience was invited to sing, as they accompanied the children’s chorus in a theme from the famed Do-Re-Mi song from The Sound of Music. Colibri Aerial Dance Academy presented their final number with the adult trio of dancers.

Singer Sarah Bonnici graced the line-up with two other entries – O Holy Night and Winter Wonderland while the Leone Band continued with a Disney Fantasy medley, and Christmas Carols sing-along and a final Gypsy Barron march which brought the audience on its feet in true seasonal celebration style.
