Remembering the great Alberto Mastromarino

Alberto Mastromarino appeared at the Aurora twice in 2017 and remained a good friend ever since.
Teatru tal-Opra Aurora takes a moment to salute the great baritone, Alberto Mastromarino, who passed away after a long battle with illness, on 4th May 2025. Born in Castelnuovo dell Misericordia in Livorno, he started his career under the guidance of Paolo Silveri. He debuted in 1987 as Amonasro in Aida at the Eliseo theatre in Rome, moving onwards onto some of the world’s greatest stages.
A humble and affable person at heart, he took on some of the biggest baritone roles in the Italian opera repertoire including Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana and Tonio in Pagliacci which he interpreted to great acclaim at the Teatru tal-Opra Aurora in 2017. A few months earlier, Mastromarino had debuted at the Aurora in the Gaulitanus’ production of Madama Butterfly, when he sang Sharpless alongside the renowned Miriam Gauci and Vincenzo Costanzo. His are indeed beautiful recollections we do have at the Aurora.
His funeral takes place today in Pastina, Santa Luce (Pisa). Condolences to his beloved Anna Valdeterra and Alberto Jnr.
