Mothers and toddlers get a real treat on the Aurora’s opera stage
The young singers at the Aurora Youth Choir were very eager and delighted to present a very special production for Mothers and their babies with Your Mother and Mine.
a nursery on stage
Presented on the Aurora’s main stage on mothering Sunday, 8th May, Your Mother and Mine lived up to its promise and indeed was a special theatre-treat for mummies and babies, toddlers and kids (daddies included!) with a line-up of fun, interactive and heartwarming tunes; from Disney evergreens to chants, from lullabies to nursery rhymes. Covered in carpets and matting, and sheltered by a canopy of flickering lights, the massive Aurora stage was transformed into an intimate nursery shared by singers and dozens of toddlers and young children surrounded by scores of adults who brought their kids for a special mother’s day treat.
a children’s production for children
While young singers had been busily preparing very interesting vocal arrangements for well-known melodies, the mini-concert was much more than just a musical concert. It turned out to be a very fun and interactive event in which children and grown-ups sang, danced and joined in the fun.
Apart from its entertainment value for the audience, the two 35-minute runs of the mini-concert were also didactic and formative in nature for the young members of the Aurora Youth Choir. Indeed, singing was just one small part of their task which included anything from production planning, set design, light design, choreographies, texts and presentations, hospitality, props, cleaning and logistics and finance. It was really and truly their own production.
Taking its name from Walt Disney’s Peter Pan famed track, the concert opened with Your Mother Mine and swiftly skipped onto Doris Day’s Che Sara’ Sara’. Other musical numbers included You’re My Mum and an original fantasy arrangement of Twinkle twinkle little star for 3-part chorus. The line-up also included dramatised number songs, action songs and other chants and rhymes which children usually follow on television and the web. Eyes could be seen sparkling as children recognised TV songs being brought to live in a very creative and live manner.
Coming-up next
The Aurora Youth Choir, the junior chorus at the Aurora will be back with similar events in the upcoming seasons, while the Aurora stage now braces itself to host the much coveted Leone Goes Pop as it returns, for the first time since COVID-19 in a new indoor format.
